Baseball Buckeyes win weekend series against Big Ten leaders Michigan State

The Buckeyes took two of three from the Michigan State Spartans in a weekend series at Bill Davis Stadium, drawing to within one game of first place in the conference standings.

The Buckeyes used their powerful bats in beating the Spartans, recording double-digit hits in each game (12, 16 and 14) and a total of 17 multi-hit games from its starters for the weekend, including three each from Brian DeLucia, Tim Wetzel, Josh Dezse, the Buckeyes' one, two and four hitters.

The Spartans' game one, 5-4 victory on Friday night was a pitchers duel between Spartans' right-hander Kurt Wunderlich, who pitched eight strong innings and yielded only four runs, while recording five strikeouts, and Ohio State righty Drew Rucinski, who went 7.1 innings while yielding four runs with two strikeouts.

The Spartans won the game thanks to a 10th inning solo home run from LF Jordan Keur, after Ohio State 1B Josh Dezse managed to tie the game at four on an 8th inning two-run homer. The Buckeyes then left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th after suffering back-to-back strikeouts at the hands of Spartans' reliever Tony Weiber to end the game.

The Buckeyes battled back to win Saturday's game two 9-8, behind RF Brian DeLucia's two-hit, three-RBI afternoon. The Buckeyes took the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning on a RBI double from CF Tim Wetzel, who drove in SS Tyler Engle. Pitcher Jared Strayer recorded the save for the Buckeyes after shutting down the Spartans' comeback bid in the 9th.

Sunday's rubber match was a 10-5 win for the Buckeyes as they plated three runs in each the 7th and 8th innings. Josh Dezse's bases-loaded, three-RBI, off-the-wall triple in the bottom of the 7th inning was the difference in the ball game as it turned a 5-4 Spartans' lead into a 7-5 Buckeye advantage, a lead the Buckeyes would never relinquish.

The weekend series pushed the Buckeyes' record to an even 15-15 (5-4) and slotted them a game back of first place in the Big Ten Conference.

The Buckeyes play Bowling Green this Wednesday, 6:35 p.m., at Bill Davis Stadium.

Ohio State Football Scrimmage

The Buckeyes held a shortened scrimmage in Ohio Stadium Saturday morning as the team continues spring practice leading up to the spring game on Saturday April 23. The Defense (Gray) beat the Offense (Scarlet) 87-72. The scrimmage was called after a lightning strike near the stadium.

The scrimmage was open to the media but no photos or video were allowed. After the scrimmage select players gave interviews at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Here is OSU's Orhian Johnson.

And Mike Adams.

Notes/Thoughts from the scrimmage:

- The Defense looked energized, forcing turnovers and delivering big hits. The offense needs some work.

- No quarterback helped or hurt themselves, everyone had passes dropped.

- Terrelle Pryor did not participate in the scrimmage but was throwing the ball around well in some passing drills.

- At one point Pryor acted as a coach on the field for Braxton Miller.

- Joe Bauserman had a nice fade pass into coverage in the back of the end zone.

- Taylor Graham picked up a first down with an excellent fake handoff. Graham should get some consideration for the QB job.

- Kenny Guiton was stripped of the ball as he dropped back to throw.

- Right now I would set the opening game QB depth chart as:

1) Bauserman

2) Guiton

3) Braxton Miller

4) Graham

5) Justin Siems

2-4 are all very close to each other and could easily catch Bauserman.

- Jaamal Berry had a nice kickoff return for a touchdown. Or in other words the OSU kickoff team is in midseason form.

- Corey Brown (WR #10) made a few good catches in coverage.

- The camouflage helmets looked great.

- The weather started out perfect for football feeling like a fall afternoon. Then very heavy rain quickly moved in. Jim Tressel kept the scrimmage going through the monsoon for about five minutes until the lightning.

Baseball Buckeyes roughed up by Miami (OH) 12-4

The Miami Redhawks beat up the Ohio State baseball Buckeyes tonight behind the stellar pitching of righty Ryan Meyers, who pitched a five-inning, two-hit, no earned runs gem to secure the win in his first start of the season.

The Buckeyes were unable to manufacture any offensive consistency, netting only three hits and two runs, both scored by CF Tim Wetzel, before plating two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning, after the game was far out of reach.

The Buckeyes' offense struggled without the bat of 2B Ryan Cypret, the team's leader in batting average hitting .393 on the year. Cypret was nursing a cut on his hand, suffered in a collision with a member of the Columbus Clippers in the two teams' scrimmage on Tuesday.

The Redhawks jumped out on the Buckeyes early, with five runs in the first six innings, including a four run 2nd inning that featured a solo HR by SS Brad Gshwind and a two-run blast from LF Marcus Makuch.

Ohio State starter John Kuchno was chased after three innings after yielding four hits and five runs, four of them earned, in 64 pitches. The loss dropped Kuchno's record to 0-3 for the year.

The loss drops the Buckeyes to 10-12 on the year.

Ohio State resumes Big Ten play with a three-game series beginning Friday against the Indiana Hoosiers this weekend in Bloomington, In.

Baseball Buckeyes take 2 of 3 from Northwestern

Ohio State's baseball team began its Big Ten season with a bang last weekend, taking 2 of 3 games from the Northwestern Wildcats at Bill Davis Stadium.

Buoyed by Big Ten Player of the Week, catcher Greg Solomon, who batted .600 (6-10) for the weekend with four RBIs and two doubles, the Buckeyes won Friday's game 7-2 and Sunday's game 15-14. Their only defeat coming Saturday, 7-3.

Friday's contest was the Big Ten opener for both teams. Paced by Solomon's 3-3, two RBI day at the plate and starting pitcher Drew Rucinski's five strikeouts and one earned run yielded in six strong innings of work, the Buckeyes turned a 7th inning 2-1 deficit into a 7-2 victory behind four runs in the 7th and two more in the 8th. The victory was the first conference win for first-year head coach Greg Beals.

Saturday was unkind to the Buckeyes, who fell behind Northwestern 3-0 after the first half-inning of the game. The 1st inning deficit proved too much for the Buckeyes to over-come, as they only managed to cut the lead to 3-2, before surrendering two runs to the Wildcats in the both the 6th and 7th innings. The Buckeyes offense left the bases loaded on two separate occasions and wasted second baseman Ryan Cypret's heroic 4-5 day at the plate. Cypret accounted for four of the Buckeyes' nine total hits on the afternoon.

Sunday's clash proved to be the most exciting game of the weekend as the Buckeyes and Wildcats combined for 29 runs, 37 hits, 12 pitchers and two home runs. Eight of nine Buckeyes starters recorded hits on the day, including six with multi-hit games. All nine Wildcat starters recorded hits including seven with multi-hit performances.

The Buckeyes took a 14-7 lead after plating five runs in the 6th inning, however the Wildcats would not go away as they managed three runs in the 7th before tying the game in the top of the 9th on a two-out, three-run homer by Northwestern pitcher Jack Havey.

The Buckeyes won the game in the bottom of the 9th however, after Northwestern reliever Paul Snieder committed a throwing error on a Tim Wetzel sacrifice bunt, which allowed the Buckeyes' Brian DeLucia to score the winning run all the way from first base.

The weekend series pushed the Buckeyes' record to 10-11 (2-1) and dropped Northwestern to 8-15 (1-2).

The Buckeyes will play the Miami (OH) Redhawks on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. EST at Bill Davis Stadium, in Columbus.

Buckeyes Sweep Minnesota Doubleheader, Even Big Ten Record at 2-2

Needing to rebound after a a rough Big Ten opening weekend against the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Ohio State Women's Softball program evened their record at 2-2 in Big Ten Play by sweeping a Saturday doubleheader against the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In the first game, the bats came alive for the Buckeyes. The Scarlet and Gray got on the board in the top of the third inning when Julia Pecina scored from third on a wild pitch by Minnesota pitcher Alyssa Koch. Ohio State would then add a second run in that inning when Brittany Mills scored from third on a Brittany Goodchild rbi single, but that was only the beginning of the soon-to-be Buckeye offensive onslaught.

In the top of the fourth, it was Pecina again coming up big for her ballclub as she knocked in Buckeye catcher Melissa Rennie to make 3-0 in favor of the Buckeyes.Three more runs would cross the plate for Ohio State in the top of the fifth inning when Evelyn Carrillo drew a bases loaded walk, followed by Rennie knocking in Goodchild on an rbi groundout and an rbi single by Buckeye third baseman Meghan Colletta.

An Alicia Herron rbi double, a Colletta sacrifice fly, and a Melaina Saalfield two-run rbi double in the sixth inning rounded out the scoring for Ohio State who out-hit Minnesota in the first game 11-1.

Karisa Medrano, the Buckeye righthander from Albuquerque, New Mexico, had an excellent game in the circle for Ohio State as she shut out the Golden Gophers for five innings on one hit while striking out three and walking five on her way to picking up her third win of the season.

In the second game, the Buckeyes fell behind early, but were able to produce a stunning rally to complete the series sweep.

The Scarlet and Gray struck first in the top of the first when Carrillo knocked in Dee Dee Hillman on an rbi single to left center. That lead would be short-lived, however, as Minnesota went on to score two in the first, one in the second, and two in the third to build a commanding 5-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, the Buckeye bats awakened and left a mark that Minnesota pitching won't soon forget. Pecina, a major offensive contrbutor in game 1, started the inning off with a lead-off double to centerfield. She would come around to score on an rbi triple by Mills. An rbi single by Goodchild and a walk issued to Herron soon followed. After a Carrillo groundout advanced both Goodchild and Herron into scoring position, Wellington, Ohio native Melissa Rennie connected for a two-rbi single to tie the game at 5 apiece. The next batter,Meghan Coletta, bashed a two-run home run to center field to give the Buckeyes a 7-5 advantage, which held up as another win on the day for Ohio State.

It was Medrano (4-10) picking up the victory again for the Scarlet and Gray as she relieved Audrey Plant in the second and went on to limit Minnesota to two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking four in 5 2/3 innings pitched.

The Buckeyes will back at it on Wednesday evening as they get set to host the Pittsburgh Panthers in a mid-week doubleheader with the first game expected to start at 4:00 pm EST at Buckeye Field.
